There are all kinds of reasons you might need to crop or re-size images and you might not have the software on your computer to allow you to make these kinds of changes. Rest assured, there are plenty of apps readily available on the web to help you. One of the simplest is PicMonkey (plus I like the name!).
You will be prompted to select an image from your library. Navigate to an image on your computer and double click it to open. I’ve chosen this photograph I took last year of the seaside changing huts at Muizenberg Beach 🙂 Let’s size this for a Facebook cover photo (851px by 315px).
Go to www.picmonkey.com and click ‘edit’ at the top.
Click ‘crop’ at the top of the left menu, and insert the values for width and height. Make sure you tick ‘scale Photo’ (this ensures the width of the image stays at 851px no matter how big you make the crop box.
Click ‘apply’.
You will see an elongated cover-photo shaped box on your image. Hold shift (to keep the proportion) and drag the corners of the box over your image until you have a crop you’d like for your cover photo. Double click to save the crop.
Then click ‘save’ at the top of the image.
Here you can change the file name, select a file quality and save your image to your computer. Because we have cropped our image to 851px wide we can select the highest quality – Sean – without the file size being too large.
Click ‘Save to my computer’ and you’re done!
To change your Facebook cover photo navigate to your page or profile and click the camera icon in the top left corner.
